Showing with whom I belong: The desire to belong publicly on social media

Despite a plethora of social media use research, surprisingly little is known about what users post about, and, more importantly, why . In three studies ( N = 1,140), we present novel evidence for disposition describing individual differences in the desire to display belonging on media: belong publicly (DTBP). We validate an eight-item DTBP scale, encompassing both high quantity (e.g., having many friends) and quality close media. The scale shows good internal consistency test-retest reliability over two weeks. related to, but conceptually distinct from neighboring constructs such as need popularity, well other personality dimensions drive behaviors extraversion, public self-consciousness, comparison propensity. indicators active passive use, daily media, frequency posting belonging, addiction, above beyond constructs, different platforms (i.e., Instagram Facebook). sum, reliable valid construct that aids understanding how individuals • trait, Desire Belong Publicly (DTBP), 8-item applicable (3 studies, 1140). relates various established constructs. add research into content motivation postings, rather than focusing solely.
